Activision announced on Thursday that its popular battle royale game Call of Duty: Warzone will be coming to mobile phones. We are designing an all-new AAA mobile experience that will bring Call of Duty: Warzone’s exhilarating, fluid and massive action to players on the go,” Activision said in a blog post.
This mobile Warzone will be a “large-scale, battle royale experience” constructed “natively for mobile with cutting-edge technology designed to excite gamers around the world for many years to come,” according to the post. As a result, it appears that this game is in the early stages of development, as the article lists multiple open positions but doesn’t offer any screenshots or even a release date. As far as cross-platform play goes, Activision hasn’t confirmed whether the game would be like Apex Legends Mobile, which only allows you to play versus other mobile players. Activision did not respond to further questions.
In the case of Activision’s own Call of Duty: Mobile, which was developed with the help of Tencent-owned TiMi Studios, the game has already racked up $1.5 billion in global lifetime player spending since its 2019 launch, according to Sensor Tower. Activision may be hoping that lightning will strike twice with a mobile Warzone.
The Warzone brand is already well-known, and other popular mobile shooters like PUBG: Mobile and Garena Free Fire appear to be a good fit for the company’s strategy. However, a mobile Warzone will be entering an increasingly competitive industry, with games like Riot Games’ Valorant and EA’s Battlefield also on the way.
Activision is making some modifications to the Call of Duty franchise, and this new mobile Warzone is the result. They are working on a new Warzone experience that is expected to be published this year and reportedly postponing the 2023 Call of Duty title. Because of pending Microsoft takeover, Activision is also under the spotlight.
