This $20 T-shirt from Amazon has made me reconsider spending money on designer tees

  • With so many possibilities, finding the ideal T-shirt can seem impossible.
  • After trying on hundreds, I’ve settled on a $20 T-shirt from Amazon as my personal favorite.
  • It keeps its shape and is available in a variety of colors and tie-dye prints.

We’ve tested dozens of tees between myself and the other style writers on our team in our quest to find the best T-shirt for most people (we named Everlane the current champ), but on a personal level, that quest came to an end a few months ago when I came across a simple tee from Amazon’s in-house label The Drop.

What exactly is The Drop?

The Drop is a trend-forward garment line that provides regular “drops” of limited edition collections co-designed by influencers, unlike Amazon’s other in-house labels, which tend to focus on wardrobe basics. Amazon makes it easy and economical to stay up with the current it-pieces, with anything from $40 strappy slip-on sandals to $60 puff-sleeve midi dresses — not to mention fast with the added advantage of 2-day Prime shipping.

When the tie-dye fad exploded last year, I opted for a blue and white T-shirt from The Drop’s core line instead of doing it myself. I couldn’t believe I’d found a new holy grail tee when it arrived. I was even more astonished that it arrived from Amazon, as someone who has tried a lot of premium T-shirts around the $100 mark. I ordered two more within a few weeks.

The Drop

This tee appeals to me because it is made entirely of cotton. The fabric is thick and durable, with no spandex (though the tie-dye tees seem to be thicker than the solid colors). On hot days, it’s not exactly cool, but this is what allows the shirt to keep its shape, which no other tee has ever done for me. It’s also somewhat cropped and boxy, giving the otherwise traditional silhouette a modern twist. When I’m in a rush, I’ll slip one on with jeans and it still seems like a complete outfit.

An embroidered heart in the shape of The Drop’s emblem is a modest distinguishing element at the corner of the hem. I’m not typically a fan of logos, but the subtle embroidered, rather than a peeling screenprint, gives a nice touch.

Dimensions and fit

As previously stated, this shirt is produced without spandex and so has very little elasticity. As a result, you might want to go up a size. I went with my usual size XS since I wanted a more fitting look, and despite the fact that it appeared small when I initially took it out of the package, it fit wonderfully after I put it on. I’m sure a size small would have worked just as well.

I haven’t had any shrinkage (I don’t let the tee sit in the dryer for more than 10 minutes), but keep in mind that anything made of 100 percent cotton will shrink over time. The whole size range is from XXS to 3X, with a variety of color options ranging from basic white to multicolor tie-dye.

Everyone has their own concept of the ideal T-shirt, but if price and a fit that won’t warp after a few hours of wear are top priorities, this Amazon bargain is worth considering. The nine color selections cover all the bases, and Prime shipping ensures that a refill is never more than two days away. Right now, I’m tempted to add another to my collection.
