Overview of Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Animal Crossing: New Horizons takes players on a serene island getaway, where they become the proud owners of a deserted island. The game begins with the player arriving on the island, greeted by the lovable character Tom Nook, who provides guidance and support throughout the game. From there, players have the freedom to shape their own virtual paradise and create a unique haven that reflects their personal style and preferences.
Customization and Decoration
One of the standout features of Animal Crossing: New Horizons is its extensive customization options. Players can design their own furniture, clothes, and even entire landscapes, allowing for endless creative possibilities. With a wide array of customization tools and resources available, players can truly make their island their own, bringing their imagination to life.
Exploring the island is a core element of the gameplay experience. From lush forests to sandy beaches, each corner of the island holds hidden treasures and surprises. As players explore, they can discover rare items, encounter unique wildlife, and unearth fossils to expand their island’s museum. The sense of discovery and the joy of stumbling upon unexpected delights make every visit to the island a delightful adventure.
Interactions with Villagers
Animal Crossing: New Horizons is populated by a diverse cast of charming animal villagers, each with their own distinct personalities and quirks. Interacting with these villagers creates a sense of community and friendship. Players can engage in conversations, complete tasks for villagers, and even invite them to live on their island. Building relationships with these endearing characters is an integral part of the game, fostering a sense of connection and warmth.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons features frequent seasonal events that keep the gameplay experience fresh and engaging throughout the year. From holiday celebrations to special events like fishing tournaments or bug-catching competitions, there is always something happening on the island. These events not only provide unique rewards and activities but also encourage players to return to the game regularly and experience the joy of shared festivities.
Graphics and Sound Design
The visual and auditory elements of Animal Crossing: New Horizons contribute to its immersive and charming atmosphere. The game boasts stunning visuals with vibrant colors and beautiful attention to detail. Whether it’s the gentle sway of the trees or the sound of waves crashing on the shore, the game’s serene soundtrack and ambient sound effects create a tranquil ambiance that invites players to relax and unwind.
Multiplayer and Online Features
Animal Crossing: New Horizons offers robust multiplayer options, allowing players to connect with friends and family both locally and online. Through multiplayer, players can visit each other’s islands, trade items, and enjoy activities together. This social aspect adds a new layer of enjoyment to the game, as players can share their creativity, collaborate on projects, and make memories with loved ones, even when physically apart.
Should You Time Travel in New Horizons?
In Hawaii, there is a concept known as “island time,” which is promoted to visitors as a laid-back lifestyle to which they are urged to become accustomed by not caring if people are late. (In reality, it just means that you’ll spend a lot of time sitting in traffic.) If you can adapt to island time in New Horizons, go for it! I, however, was too excited to wait to unlock tools, shops, and all the other goodies (that you get faster in previous games). In order to time travel, I broke my usual rule and did the following:
- Complete your daily goals and talk to Tom Nook.
- Make a game save.
- Scroll down to System in the Switch System Settings menu.
- Choose Date and Time and turn Synchronize via Internet to OFF.
- Click on Date and Time and set your clock to the next day.
- Select Animal Crossing: New Horizons from the menu screen and tap X to exit it.
- You should be playing on your fresh day after restarting the game.
It’s crucial to note that New Horizons contains built-in consequences for abusing time travel, so Nintendo recognizes time travel as part of Animal Crossing, but mildly discourages it — so you may regard it like cheat codes for money in The Sims 4, or quicksaving every three seconds in Fallout 4. In the 3DS’ Animal Crossing: New Leaf, I staunchly refused to change the clock and spent the full actual year collecting all the bugs, fish, and seasonal treats available. So resorting to this was a tough decision for me, but one that I’d grudgingly recommend for the first 15 or so in-game days. After that, the majority of your island layout tools should be available to you, and the urge to travel through time should fade.
Reception and Popularity
Since its release, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has received widespread acclaim from players and critics alike. The game’s delightful gameplay, captivating world, and relaxing nature have made it a beloved title. With its ability to provide a sense of escape and tranquility, especially during challenging times, Animal Crossing: New Horizons has become a cultural phenomenon, capturing the hearts of millions around the globe.
Multiple multiplayer options are available in Animal Crossing: New Horizons, including local multiplayer on a single Switch, where friends can join with a single Joy Con. It’s cool, but chaotic, and aside from showing off your island and taking group photos, there’s not much to do but get in the way of each other. You can also visit other islands over a local connection (you have to be really close: About five feet away. You lose everything you collected on another island if the connection is lost.) One of my favourite features of the 3DS New Leaf was the StreetPass mode, which allowed you to browse through strangers’ homes and buy furniture you liked. There’s no convenient way to see random islands or order cool stuff from others like that in New Horizons, and that disappointingly cripples discovery. We’ll just have to share our amazing homes, fashion choices, and island designs elsewhere.
- Engaging and relaxing gameplay experience

- Charming and lovable characters
- Seasonal events and updates that keep the game fresh
- Strong multiplayer features for social interaction
- Progression can feel slow-paced at times
- Limited control over some aspects of gameplay
- Lack of in-depth storytelling compared to other genres
In conclusion, Animal Crossing: New Horizons offers an enchanting and immersive gaming experience. Its combination of customization, exploration, and social interaction creates a world that feels alive and inviting. With its charming visuals, soothing sound design, and delightful characters, the game provides a peaceful escape from the demands of everyday life. Animal Crossing: New Horizons is a must-play for anyone seeking a relaxing and heartwarming gaming experience.
