The gaming world was shocked to learn in September 2020 that Microsoft was acquiring ZeniMax Media for $7.5 billion in cash, bringing Bethesda Softworks to Xbox. Bethesda Softworks has been developing and distributing games since 1986, with a lengthy history of titles such as The Elder Scrolls, DOOM, Dishonored, and others. Many of the games on which these creators are now working could be among the best Xbox RPGs ever made.
We’ve compiled a comprehensive list just to ensure that the publishing sector remains intact. But make no mistake: Bethesda is part of the Xbox family, which now includes eight Bethesda Softworks companies and fifteen Xbox Game Studios studios. Here’s everything we know about Bethesda Softworks’ current projects.
Bethesda Softworks Alpha Dog Video games
Alpha Dog Games was founded in 2012 and was acquired by ZeniMax in October of this year. Alpha Dog, based in Halifax, Canada, specializes in mobile games like MonstoCity: Rampage. This team will very likely continue to create Android and iOS mobile games.
Bethesda Softworks Arkane Studios
Arkane Studios was founded in 1999 and is made up of two studios: Arkane Austin in Austin, Texas, and Arkane Lyon in Lyon, France. These teams, which were acquired by ZeniMax in 2012, have a history of working on immersive games like the Dishonored franchise and Prey. Deathloop, a timed PS5 console exclusive, is currently in development by Arkane Lyon. Prey: Mooncrash was Arkane Austin’s most recent project, and while the company is continuously hiring, its next project is uncertain.
Bethesda Softworks Bethesda Game Studios
Bethesda Game Studios, founded in 1986, now has four studios in Rockville, Maryland, Montreal, Quebec, Austin, Texas, and Dallas, Texas. These groups have extensive experience with The Elder Scrolls and Fallout franchises. Starfield, a new science-fiction IP, as well as The Elder Scrolls 6 are now under development.
Bethesda Softworks id Software program
ZeniMax bought id Software in 2009, after it was founded in 1991. id has worked on a slew of first-person shooters, including Rage, Quake, and DOOM, from its two studios in Richardson, Texas, and Frankfurt, Germany. The teams are now working on Doom Eternal story extensions as well as maintaining and improving the id Tech engine.
Bethesda Softworks MachineGames
MachineGames is based in Uppsala, Sweden, and was founded in 2009 before being acquired by ZeniMax in 2010. MachineGames is working on Wolfenstein: Youngblood and Wolfenstein: Cyberpilot, which will be released in 2019. The team’s next project is unknown, but it is expected to be a full sequel to Wolfenstein: The New Colossus, which was released in 2017.
Bethesda Softworks Roundhouse Studios
When Human Head Studios dissolved in 2019, Bethesda Softworks contacted the employees and hired them to start Roundhouse Studios in Madison, Wisconsin. This group has previously worked on action games such as the Rune series, as well as shooters such as Prey (2006) and the now-infamously-cancelled Prey 2. We’ll have to wait and see what Roundhouse’s next project is.
Bethesda Softworks Tango Gameworks
Tango Gameworks is based in Tokyo, Japan, and was founded and bought in 2010. The Evil Within and The Evil Within 2 were created by the team led by Shinji Mikami. It is now working on Ghostwire: Tokyo, a limited-time PS5 platform exclusive.
Bethesda Softworks ZeniMax Online Studios
ZeniMax Online Studios, which was created in 2012, is still working on new content and upgrades for The Elder Scrolls Online, a massively multiplayer online role-playing game centered in the world of The Elder Scrolls. This crew, based in Hunt Valley, Maryland, will most likely continue to evolve and grow The Elder Scrolls Online indefinitely. Team members have also stated that the studio is developing a new AAA IP as well as a new engine.
The future looks promising.
With Bethesda Softworks joining Xbox, there will be a total of 23 studios working on new content for Xbox and PC players, including next-generation exclusive games for the Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
