Crunchyroll to Take Over Funimation and Wakanim

The firms announced today that streaming services Funimation and Wakanim will “unify” under the Crunchyroll brand. Crunchyroll, Wakanim, and Crunchyroll’s VRV are all owned by Sony-owned Funimation. Existing Funimation, Wakanim, and VRV subscribers get a special deal for 60 days of Crunchyroll Premium for free as a “welcome” present. Current Funimation and Wakanim subscribers are strongly encouraged to terminate their memberships before the merger is completed.

Users will be able to access the libraries using a single account (and will by default pay for one subscription). Current seasons will be updated on all three platforms, but new episodes will only be added to Crunchyroll beginning with the Spring 2022 anime season. This applies to both simulcast and dubbed titles. A short video announcement was also released:

It may be a surprise move, but the Crunchyroll brand has always been better when the website was more solid and accessible. Crunchyroll’s mascot turned VTuber, Crunchyroll Hime, was a familiar sight among most western anime fans when the awards were held for the sixth year in a succession last month. Crunchyroll has dabbled in anime production as well. Crunchyroll originals include Tower of God, God of Highschool, and Tonikaku Kawai.

Funimation has previously merged with AnimeLab, an Australian and New Zealand-focused streaming service. Many fans were alarmed by the acquisitions, which gave Sony an almost full control over the western market.

Following Crunchyroll’s merger with Funimation, every anime will be available on Crunchyroll

Crunchyroll announced on Tuesday that Funimation and Crunchyroll will merge, with all Funimation content now available on Crunchyroll’s streaming service. This is fantastic news for anime enthusiasts, as they no longer need to purchase two different premium memberships.

On joining up, Funimation premium subscribers will receive a complimentary 60-day premium Crunchyroll membership. Crunchyroll will be adding more than 70 anime series (sub and dub) to its streaming service. The following is a list of all the shows that will be available on Crunchyroll:

Although these are not all of the Funimation titles accessible, Crunchyroll is striving to add all of the Funimation titles to its streaming service as soon as feasible.
