The 3rd generation iPhone SE, new Mac models, and a new iPad Air are all slated to be announced during Apple’s next special event, which will take place in just a few hours. Although rumors suggested that this new iPad will enable 5G, 9to5Mac has learnt from sources that the iPad Air 5 will be powered by the M1 processor.
According to previous speculations, the next iPad Air would be powered by the A15 Bionic technology, which is also featured in the iPhone 13 and the 6th generation iPad mini. Apple, on the other hand, appears to want to shrink the gap between the iPad Air and iPad Pro even more, this time by adding a more powerful CPU.
M1 for iPad Air 5
According to information obtained by 9to5Mac, the iPad Air 5 (codenamed J408) will feature the same M1 processor seen in Apple’s 2021 iPad Pro models as well as the first generation of Apple Silicon Macs, which includes the 24-inch iMac and 2020 MacBook Air.
The M1 chip is around 50% faster than the A15 Bionic and 70% more powerful than the A14 Bionic in terms of performance (which is the one in the 4th generation iPad Air). In comparison to the A15 Bionic, which has a 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU, the M1 processor features an 8-core CPU and 7-core GPU, as well as 8GB of RAM in its most basic version.
But why would Apple include the M1 chip in the iPad Air when it already has one in the iPad Pro? First and foremost, it’s vital to remember that the iPad Pro differs from the rest of the range in a number of ways, including the presence of a ProMotion display with XDR technology.
Because Apple aims to promote both the iPad Pro and iPad Air as computer replacements (because they both operate with the Magic Keyboard), it’s no surprise that the iPad Air will have a desktop-level processor. Take the Mac series, for example, where M1 is used in both the entry-level MacBook Air and the MacBook Pro.
Simultaneously, the iPad Pro is slated to be refreshed later this year with a new chip that will likely outperform the existing M1 chip.

Other rumors concerning the iPad Air 5 have also been confirmed by our sources. The next iPad Air will have 5G network support, which was added to the 2021 iPad Pro and iPad mini 6 last year.
We can also confirm that the iPad Air 5 will have the same screen resolution as the current iPad Air 4th generation. The new iPad is also believed to have an improved front camera with support for Center Stage. According to multiple sources, the new iPad Air will be unveiled tomorrow.
The event will begin at 10:00 a.m. PT/1:00 p.m. ET on March 8. It will be shown live on Apple’s website, the company’s YouTube channel, and the Apple TV app for iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV.
