For Google Meet video chats, Google has begun to roll out live translations.
This function uses captions at the bottom of the screen to automatically translate English conversation into French, German, Portuguese, or Spanish during a Google Meet video call. On Jan. 12, Google began making these live translations available to select Workspace customers, and the feature will be rolled out to all users over the next 15 days.
“By removing language proficiency hurdles, translated subtitles help make Google Meet video calls more accessible and collaborative,” Google explains. “When meeting participants consume content in their chosen language, it helps to equalize information sharing, learning, and collaboration, ensuring that your meetings are as productive as possible for all.”
Google Meet video calls “arranged by Google Workspace Business Plus, Enterprise Standard, Enterprise Plus, the Teaching and Learning Upgrade, and Google Workspace for Education Plus subscribers” will feature live translations, according to Google. Personal Google accounts, individual Workspace accounts, and specific Workspace price tiers aren’t eligible.
Admins will not need to do anything to enable the feature; individual Google Meet users will have to pick whether or not they want to see automatically generated captions. In meetings that support live translations, go to Settings > Captions > Translated captions (web) or Settings > Captions > Live Captions > Translation Language (mobile).
