Hogwarts Legacy is an upcoming action role-playing video game set in the wizarding world of Harry Potter. The game is set in the 1800s, which is well before the events of the Harry Potter books and movies, and offers players the chance to explore a previously unseen corner of the wizarding world.
Since I was in the third grade, I’ve been waiting, along with many other people, for a truly excellent Harry Potter video game. During that time, we have been treated to some solid LEGO Potter video games, an underwhelming Quidditch video game developed by EA Sports for some reason, and we have even been forced to endure the waking nightmare that is the Harry Potter Kinect. But none of these have even come close to satisfying that fantasy of getting an admission letter to Hogwarts that unlocks the door to a hidden world. We finally got a Harry Potter game, and I’m happy to say that it does a good job of capturing some of the magic of the series with Hogwarts Legacy.
Hogwarts Legacy
Its open world map absolutely nails the vibe of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, it has stupefyingly good spellcasting combat, the characters that inhabit it are charming and unforgettable, and it is positively brimming with countless diversions to soak up dozens of hours of your time. The game was developed by Portkey Games and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. It may not be the most impressive technical achievement, and it is certainly cursed with a lack of enemy variety. Still, none of Hogwarts Legacy’s problems can cast a Descendo charm on this triumphant visit to the Wizarding World. Hogwarts Legacy is a triumphant visit to the Wizarding World.
In keeping with the majority of the Harry Potter stories that came before it, the plot of Legacy is riddled with more holes than a fishnet stocking, and it more or less expects you just to accept the fact that its magical world is illogical. You begin this magical third-person action-adventure role-playing game by transferring to Hogwarts as a fifth-year witch or wizard (for reasons that are never explained). Once there, you do everything from attending classes to fighting giant spiders with a magical stick to ride around on a hippogriff. With the exception of a relatively small number of voice options, the fantastic character creator gives you a lot of freedom to design your ideal witch or wizard, and as soon as you do so, they will immediately become embroiled in a conflict between the Wizarding World and an evil goblin. On top of that, as if being a member of a shadowy organization of sorcerers wasn’t already exciting enough, you soon find out that you’ve got some wacky, supercharged magical abilities that enable you to do extra cool stuff that also isn’t explained. This, too, isn’t really explained.
If you’re anything like me, you’ll find yourself rolling your eyes during the parts of the story in which you’re introduced to characters who have been dead for a century or more and who are giving you a lecture from paintings about the significance of events that took place a very long time ago and how you have to save the world or whatever. But once that’s over with, Legacy mostly redeems itself with a fantastic cast of non-painting characters that help boil things down into a not-too-convoluted good-guys-versus-bad-guys conflict that helps boil things down into a not-too-complicated good-guys-versus-bad-guys conflict that helps boil things down into a not-too-complicated good-guys-versus-bad-guy
Gameplay
Hogwarts Legacy is an action RPG that allows players to create their own wizard character and attend Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Players can choose to specialize in one of the four houses of Hogwarts – Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin – and progress through the game by completing missions and learning spells and potions. The game also features an open-world aspect, allowing players to explore the vast wizarding world and encounter mythical creatures, including dragons, centaurs, and more.
The majority of the cast is easily recognizable and instantly lovable.
The classmates who will befriend you on campus, accompany you on certain quests, and help you hone your abilities as a magic user are the characters you’ll spend the majority of your time with. ” “The characters you’ll spend the majority of your time with are the classmates who will accompany you on certain quests. The majority of them are memorable and instantly endearing, such as Sebastian, the cocky and morally pliable Slytherin, or Natsai, the clever and unflappable Gryffindor. Spending time with them and improving your social links through the relationship questlines they provide made my time spent at Hogwarts all the more enjoyable.
Unexpectedly, I found that I was looking forward to hanging out with my professors, whether it was my main man Professor Fig, who acts as something of a mentor and as a sidekick, or the wise-cracking charms teacher Professor Ronen, who made me love him primarily by making fun of me. These professors made me love them by making me laugh at myself. You can find each of these characters wandering the halls doing their thing, and you can choose to spend time with whichever ones are your favorites. Each of these characters gives the impression of being an essential component of the school. This is a huge and significant part of the Hogwarts fantasy, and Legacy does a fantastic job of bringing it to life.
The game world has almost everything I could have hoped for in a Harry Potter video game.
” Even better than that, though, is the world itself, which is packed with nearly everything I wanted in a Potter game and even more. ” You’ll find yourself flying around the Forbidden Forest on a broomstick, exploring dark caves lit only by the glow of your Lumos spell, and flying around the stone-cobbled halls of Hogwarts, among other things. The designers at Avalanche have done such an incredible job of capturing the look and feel of the Wizarding World that I was amazed to simply be there, despite the fact that they had me wrapped up in some rather insignificant errand.
However, this immersion can occasionally be shattered by Legacy’s shaky performance, which, during my time playing the game on PlayStation 5, suffered from virtually every performance-related problem that brings the performance review team at IGN to tears. These greatest hits include choppy framerates, strange issues in which the lighting goes from being too dark to being too bright, aggressive pop-in while rapidly moving around the map, and more. Even stranger is that each door in Hogwarts has its own brief loading screen before it can be opened. It is understandable because there is so much packed into this mammoth of an adventure; however, the PS5’s promises of the death of loading screens haven’t quite been lived up to here as it is clearly struggling to keep up with the wizardry and whimsy of the Wizarding World. It is understandable because there is so much packed into this mammoth of an adventure.
In addition to the performance problems, Legacy is an extremely buggy adventure in general. You will most likely find yourself falling through the map at least once or twice, witnessing a character or object become trapped in the environment, or perhaps even having the person you are speaking to suddenly get up and walk away from you in the middle of the conversation, leaving you to carry on the conversation with the empty spot they were standing in for about two minutes. All of these things are possible in this game. I didn’t come across anything that would end the game or that was so common that you’d probably want to curse its name, but situations like this do occur frequently enough to be an annoyance.
Graphics
The graphics in Hogwarts Legacy are top-notch and are sure to immerse players in the magical world of Harry Potter. The attention to detail in the environments and characters is impressive, and the spell effects are visually stunning. The game’s open-world environment is also beautifully rendered, providing players with a vast, breathtaking world to explore.
Sound
The sound design in Hogwarts Legacy is just as impressive as the graphics. The game features an original score that perfectly captures the mood and atmosphere of the wizarding world. The voice acting is also top-notch, with talented actors bringing the characters to life.
The fights are incredible, difficult, and completely engrossing to watch.
” As someone who finds the wand-whipping combat in the movies to be relatively boring, I was very concerned about Hogwart Legacy’s ability to keep my attention after slinging spells for dozens of hours, but I can admit when I’m wrong – the combat is fantastic, challenging, and completely engrossing. ” There is a great deal more to it than simply launching orbs of light from the end of a stick. Instead, the key to success lies in successfully dodging and countering the attacks of your enemies while simultaneously pulling off creative combos. For instance, you can use the Accio spell to draw enemies closer to you, then use the close-range Incendio spell to set them ablaze, and finally use the Bombarda spell to blow them away with its explosive power. When you unlock talent tree perks that enhance your skills with modifiers that make your elemental spells fork to nearby enemies or transform into area-of-effect attacks, chaining together abilities to make your opponents look like complete fools is always entertaining. This is especially true after you have unlocked talent tree perks that enhance your skills.
I’ll admit that I died more than my fair share of times while trying to show off a new set of spells or neglecting to see the goblin sneaking up behind me in a fair share of the combat encounters. Many of the combat encounters are legitimately challenging as well. The process of honing your abilities and determining which spells work best for you is a really entertaining one. It involves a lot of experimentation and the risk of being injured occasionally. There is even a perfect parry mechanic, which cries out to be mastered by tryhards like me who are searching for that additional hit of dopamine that comes from a timely block at the last possible second. You’ll also be required to switch up your strategy frequently because many of your foes will have color-coded shields that can only be penetrated by certain kinds of spells. In order to defeat these shields, you’ll need to cast the appropriate kind of spell. For instance, foes protected by a red shield won’t take any damage unless you strike them with a spell based on fire; consequently, you’ll need to make sure you always have a few of those on hand.
Your strategy will need to be adjusted frequently to deal with shielded foes.
Despite the fact that the combat system is always entertaining, the monsters you face will quickly run out of new strategies to employ against you. As you spend a significant portion of your time battling dark wizards, spiders, and goblins, you’ll notice that you frequently run into many of the same familiar faces. The foes that Legacy throws at you become repetitive and boring relatively quickly; however, every once in a while they’ll throw in a generic magical suit of armor or a troll that keeps appearing in different forms.
It’s a shame that there isn’t nearly as much variety here as there is in the Harry Potter universe, which is famous for featuring a wide variety of dangerous creatures and antagonists for the protagonists to overcome. It’s not like there aren’t any other enemy types to be found in Legacy – you’ll find giant, evil frogs and zombies roaming around, to name a few – it’s just that they’re not used very often in any of the main dungeons or levels, which is especially strange. They instead attack you with roughly five hundred spiders all at once, which is a peculiar choice on their part.
Because you can only have a certain number of spells equipped at any given time, the one aspect of combat that is a bit of a drag is the somewhat clumsy process for switching between, which requires some serious getting used to. This is because you can only have a certain number of spells equipped at any given time. You end up learning quite a few spells by the time you reach the end of the roughly 30-plus hour campaign, and you have to constantly reslot which ones you’ve got equipped. Keeping all of these spells organized and committed to memory becomes a challenge in and of itself, and it’s not the kind of challenge I enjoy.
You will need some lighter activities to spend your time with when you are not setting fire to spiders, and it is actually kind of crazy just how many side tasks Legacy gives you! You could spend hours decorating your very own personal space in the Room of Requirement; go around catching, grooming, and breeding all manner of fantastic beasts (if you know where to find them); practice your gardening or potion making skills; go shopping in Hogsmeade; become a champion duelist in an underground dueling ring with your classmates; or even go full Voldemort and decide you want to become a master of the Dark Arts by learning the Killing Curse and other unspeak Not only is it simple to fritter away dozens of hours, but I also found it extremely challenging to avoid becoming preoccupied with a dozen different things to the point where I forgot what I had originally intended to accomplish. I was able to finish the main story in thirty-two hours, but even though I was in a bit of a hurry to finish it, I found that it was almost impossible to concentrate and stay on task the entire time. Since there doesn’t appear to be a New Game+ mode at the moment, as soon as I finished the main storyline, I went straight back to continue completing side quests and exploring the world. You can do the same thing after the main storyline is over.
In a total of thirty-two hours, I was able to read through the primary narrative.
Quidditch is nowhere to be found in this wizarding buffet of endless ways to waste your time, which, if I may say so myself, is a rather glaring omission considering everything else that is included. The lore reason for the absence of the iconic broom-based sport is that it has been banned for one year due to some pureblood wimp who got injured the previous year, but this feels like an attempt to paper over the absence of a significant aspect of Harry Potter’s time at Hogwarts that the developers must’ve just not had time to include in the game.
Participating in one of the over one hundred optional quests that are included in the adventure is one of the ways that you can completely forget about the impending danger posed by the goblins in the primary story. Although not all of these side quests are equally entertaining – some of them are definitely your basic “go here and kill/collect this thing” errands that do little more than burn some time – many of them feature one of the aforementioned awesome characters asking for you to help them solve their problems or assist them in getting into good old-fashioned mischief. When you go to class to learn how to pot plants that try to eat you or assist a fellow student who is being picked on, those are especially wonderful reasons to slow down and immerse yourself in this world. The only thing that Legacy does is give you a lot of reasons to savor the experience of being a student at Hogwarts, and the novelty of that doesn’t wear off even when you’re sent on some pointless fetch quest. Legacy is great like that.
The experience of playing Legacy will provide you with many opportunities to make the most of your time spent as a student at Hogwarts.
It also helps that you’re often appropriately rewarded for your efforts, whether that’s earning some gear to upgrade your stats, cosmetic items to improve your swagger, or best of all: new spells, the ultimate carrot in a game where you’re often limited only by what magic you know how to cast. All of these things can help improve your experience with the game. One of the sidequests, for instance, awards you with the Alohomora spell, which, in typical Metroidvania fashion, enables you to literally unlock doors and enter areas that were previously inaccessible to you. I found that I had an insatiable hunger for as many of these game-changing abilities as I could get my grubby little paws on. Collecting spells goes a long way toward opening up the map and giving you a better bag of tricks during combat, and I found that I had an opening up the map.
You won’t be able to create full-fledged “builds” with the equipment you find, but your character will pick up some resistances and buffs, and you’ll be able to spend some time upgrading and modifying your best items for some minor improvements. Even though none of it is particularly game-changing stuff, it still captured my attention to the point where I spent a considerable amount of time looking at my equipment. Legacy appears to be keenly aware of the fact that the real loot game is about cosmetics; as a result, they find ways to hide cool-looking clothes all over the place. Of course, the real loot game is about cosmetics. These items have no bearing on the game’s play, but the opportunity to show off my Slytherin legend and get the better of all the kids from the other houses is more than enough to motivate me to acquire them. The best part is that you can replace any gear you already have equipped with the appearance of anything else you’ve obtained up to this point, which is a fantastic feature.
However, if you’re as much of a loot hoarder as I am and were hoping to gather up all the treasures in the world and dump them in a closet like in Skyrim, you’ll be painfully disappointed by Legacy’s abysmal inventory space, which only lets you hold a couple dozen items and irritably fills up in no time at all. If you’re as much of a loot hoarder as I am, you’ll be Because of this, you won’t be able to get your hands on a lot of useful items early on unless you consistently go to the menu to select which valuable loot you want to abandon every time you open a chest. You will eventually be able to make some minor improvements to your inventory, but even after those improvements it will never stop being a major pain in the cockatrice to juggle your inventory at all times.
Verdict
Hogwarts Legacy is the role-playing game (RPG) adaptation of the Harry Potter series that I’ve always wanted to play. Its open-world adventure captures all of the excitement and wonder of the Wizarding World with its memorable new characters, challenging and nuanced combat, and a wonderfully executed Hogwarts student fantasy that kept me glued to my controller for dozens of hours. The game was developed by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. It is certainly burdened by technical issues, a lackluster main story, and some poor enemy variety, but even those could not come close to breaking its enchanting spell over me. The main story lacks any real drama or emotional impact.
Hogwarts Legacy is an exciting addition to the world of Harry Potter, offering players the chance to explore a previously unseen corner of the wizarding world. The game’s impressive graphics, sound design, and open-world gameplay make it a must-play for fans of the Harry Potter franchise and action RPGs alike.
