It can be aggravating to feel as if you spend more time cleaning, tidying, and caring for your home and possessions than you do enjoying them. It’s frustrating and demoralizing to have an endless to-do list and feel like you’ll never catch up on domestic duties.

Cleaning and maintaining your home and belongings is something that we all have to do. While most of us appreciate having a clean and tidy home, few of us enjoy cleaning.

How to reduce cleaning time and simplify household chores

The topic of today’s post is simple modifications you can make to make home chores easier. You’ll be able to do them in less time and with less effort.

Use these suggestions to make housekeeping duties easier so you may enjoy a clean home without spending all of your time doing so. And instead, you’ll have more time and energy to do activities you want and enjoy your house.

1. Accept that you are good enough.

The first advice for simplifying household tasks is to change your perspective and learn to accept “good enough” when it comes to them.

There will almost certainly always be some sort of household duty for you to complete at your home. If you try to complete everything at once, you’ll likely wind up with a never-ending to-do list that you’ll never be able to finish.

Instead, choose what is sufficient for you in terms of domestic tasks. Then set a goal for yourself and accept it as good enough.

What constitutes “good enough” will differ from one individual to the next and will be determined by your own personal preferences. Decide what matters most to you and what you’re willing to give up. Alternatively, what standards are you ready to slacken in order to accept things as acceptable enough?

The idea is to complete the household chores that are important to you to a standard that you can live with. And in a time frame that you are comfortable spending to chores.

“Good enough” is an example of this.

In my personal life, here’s an example of good enough. Almost every closet in our house has mirrored closet doors. We have small children who enjoy putting their hands (and faces!) on the mirrored doors.

The sparkling, smudge-free surfaces always seem to lure my kids to them like moths to a flame as soon as I clean the mirrors!

I used to be obsessed with fingerprints, smudges, and facial prints (why?!). But I felt it wasn’t worth the time, effort, or aggravation of regularly cleaning the mirrors only to have them marked up again soon after.

I now clean the mirrors once or twice a week. Allow the fingerprints to fill in the gaps and call it excellent!

2. Have less possessions

Beyond adopting a good enough mindset when it comes to domestic tasks, having less stuff is the most effective strategy to ease cleaning and chores.

You not only have less items to clean when you have less stuff. However, you will have less clutter to clean.

Every possession you have necessitates some of your time. You must clean it, maintain it, store it, pick it up, look for it, arrange it, and care for it, among other things. The less stuff you have, the less you have to look after.

It also means you’ll have fewer stuff to move and tidy around when conducting domestic duties. There is less dust to collect, less items to move to clean beneath, less stuff to clean around, and so on. Cleaning will be quicker and easier as well.

It applies to the big items, like furniture, the small stuff, like décor and knick-knacks, and everything in between, to have less stuff to ease household duties.

Not only does having less stuff mean having less to clean, but it also means having less to clean around. However, clearing out the clutter and unnecessary items from your home also clears out some of the visual clutter. Assisting you in making your home look cleaner and more organized!

3. Keep flat surfaces free of clutter.

Clearing the flat surfaces in your home is a fantastic place to start if you’re striving to have less clutter to assist ease household duties.

Flat surfaces can readily become clutter catchers, with clutter and “things” piling up and accumulating. And it appears that clutter attracts more clutter. As a result, the more flat surfaces you have, the more stuff seems to gather.

Keeping flat surfaces free of clutter means fewer things to clean, fewer things to clean around, and fewer things to attract additional clutter!

It’s entirely up to you how clear you want the flat surfaces in your home to be. However, removing (totally or partially) the flat surfaces in your home will immediately help to streamline housekeeping duties.

A clear bathroom counter, for example, allows you to wipe the worktops and sink fast and simply. Rather of needing to spend time cleaning the surface and putting things away merely to wipe the counter and sink.

4. Keep the flooring free of clutter.

Keeping floors clean is a good example of this. Not only are clear floors easier to vacuum, sweep, and mop, but they also make it easier to keep up with those activities on a regular basis. However, dirt and dust have fewer hiding places.

My goal is to have only the legs of the furniture touching the floor. Everything else has a home off the floor, making cleaning quicker and easier.

5. Everything has a place, and everything has a place.

The key to keeping your floors and surfaces clean is to keep everything in your home in easy-to-access places.

It’s simple to pick up and tidy up your house when everything has a place and it’s easy to put things away in their place. And make sure it’s clean on a frequent basis. Then you’ll need to spend less time picking things up when completing domestic duties. Instead, you’ll be able to complete your responsibilities more quickly and easily.

6. Do your chores on a regular basis.

Cleaning and home duties can be made to take less time and effort if you keep track of them and remain on top of them.

Cleaning your house requires more time and effort if you don’t keep up with duties on a regular basis. Simply because additional messes, dirt, dust, grime, and other contaminants have accumulated. And getting your space back to your satisfactory level will take additional time and effort.

Giving your bathroom counters a quick clean every day or two, for example, will just take a minute or two each time. In the meantime, the mess won’t have a chance to pile up.

However, if you wait a long time between wiping your counters, cleaning the bathroom will be a greater job, requiring more time and work.

7. Clean a little every day.

If you’re attempting to simplify household tasks, doing some cleaning every day may seem paradoxical. However, if you tidy a little every day, you’ll never have to perform chores for hours at a time. Alternatively, you might spend your entire weekend cleaning.

Not only that, but cleaning a bit at a time might help you feel less overwhelmed and exhausted. Also, it will be easy to fit into a busy schedule.

8. Stick to a cleaning routine.

A cleaning schedule is an excellent tool for making household duties easier.

Cleaning tasks can be set on autopilot with the help of a cleaning schedule. You don’t have to figure out when and how to accomplish your chores. Instead, when it’s time to clean, you may jump right in and start to work.

Cleaning schedules can be created in a variety of ways. Experiment with numerous possibilities until you find one that best suits your needs, schedule, lifestyle, and tastes.

You can set a goal to clean one room per day, do one chore per day, set up one day per week for chores, or make a list of daily, weekly, and monthly duties to chose from as you go.

9. Clean up messes as soon as they occur.

Cleaning up problems as they occur rather than allowing them to be dealt with later can assist simplify household duties in general, just as keeping up with chores on a regular basis might.

If you see a problem or something that needs to be cleaned, especially if it’s a simple job, attempt to take care of it straight away. You’ll thank yourself afterwards for cleaning things up. Instead of abandoning it and having to clean it up later, do it now if it only takes a minute or two.

Clean up spills as they occur, put things away as you see them out, clean while you cook, spot clean messes as they occur, and so on.

Rather than having a long list of small jobs to deal with later, tackle them one at a time as they come up to keep you on track.

10. Reset your residence on a regular basis.

It’s a good idea to reset your house at least once or twice a day to remain on top of and simplify household duties.

Taking a few minutes to tidy, pick up, and fast clean an area, or returning it to its baseline or ideal degree of tidiness, is referred to as a reset. It’s not a deep clean; rather, it’s a few minutes spent restoring an area to its previous state.

Making resets a part of your everyday routine can keep any messes from spiraling out of control. Which can be really useful in keeping your home clean. The best part is that the more consistent you are with your resets, the faster and easier they will be.

11. Establish a daily routine for important chores.

Another wonderful technique to make household duties easier is to establish regular routines for the critical tasks that must be completed each day to keep your home running smoothly.

Maintaining these few responsibilities keeps your home functional, comfortable, and under control. Even if no other tasks are completed during the day.

Making the beds, swiftly wiping the bathroom countertops, beginning a load of laundry, and unloading the dishwasher are just a few of my everyday critical tasks.

Then each evening, conduct a quick reset of the entire house by folding and putting away the laundry, starting the dishwasher, wiping down the kitchen, and doing a quick reset of the entire house.

These few tasks keep our home working at a level I’m comfortable with, even if nothing else gets done during the day.

12. Keep cleaning products close to where you’ll need them.

Another simple approach to make household duties easier is to put cleaning products close to where you use and need them.

Keep a small basket of cleaning materials in each bathroom, for example. Then you’ll be able to rapidly draw out what you need.

Keep standard cleaning materials, such as your vacuum and dusting equipment, in a central location in your home where they are easy to find and store. Cleaning duties can be made easier by stocking a cleaning supplies basket that you can grab and go.

Again, everything you can do to remove roadblocks that make it difficult to complete chores quickly, effortlessly, and on a regular basis is a good thing.

13. Make your laundry routine easier.

Keeping up with the laundry may be a major headache for many families. If you always feel like you’re buried beneath piles of clothes, try an alternative laundry regimen to see if it helps.

Continue to experiment with different routines until you find one that suits your needs, preferences, lifestyle, family, and schedule.

You could, for example, do one load of laundry per day, set up one day per week for laundry, run a load when the laundry basket fills up, do one sort of laundry load each day of the week, and so on.

There are numerous options available. When you can keep up with laundry reasonably simply, you’ve found what works for you. And you won’t be behind or overwhelmed by laundry any longer.

14. Use a less number of dishes

Keeping up with dirty dishes is another typical source of frustration in many households. Having fewer dishes in your kitchen is an easy method to simplify dish duty.

It’s simple for you and your family to grab a clean dish or glass each time when you have a lot of dishes. You’re already using the dish or glass without cleaning, washing, or reusing it.

However, with fewer dishes, you and your family will have to search for, rinse, and reuse glasses and plates throughout the day. At the end of each day, there will be less dirty dishes to deal with.

15. Use division to your advantage.

Split up duties and have everyone pitch in if you live with others, whether it’s a partner, family, or roommate. Even small children may assist by tidying up their toys, making their beds, and placing their clothes in the wash basket, among other things.

Just keep in mind that done is preferable to flawless. Even if your family doesn’t perform the chores the way you do them, they are still trying to keep the house in order and make tasks easier for you!

16. Hire someone to do your housework for you.

It is not always possible to outsource domestic duties or hire a cleaning service. However, if it is, it is a fantastic method to make home chores easier.

Nothing beats having someone else take care of your domestic tasks!

17. Look for ways to make domestic tasks more pleasurable.

Cleaning the bathroom is probably not anyone’s idea of a good time. However, if outsourcing isn’t an option and the task must be completed, discover ways to make it more pleasurable!

For a pleasant distraction while you clean, turn on your favorite song, podcast, or show. When you’re finished, reward yourself with a small treat. Alternatively, try to do all of your household responsibilities during the week so you can spend your weekends relaxing or doing something you enjoy.
