Instagram’s standalone Boomerang and Hyperlapse applications are being phased out

Instagram said last month that the IGTV app will be discontinued, as the platform has been incorporated into Instagram Videos within the main app. The Meta-owned company, on the other hand, has opted to phase down two more less-popular apps: Boomerang and Hyperlapse.

Instagram has discreetly withdrawn the Boomerang and Hyperlapse applications from the App Store and Google Play, according to TechCrunch. Boomerang, which allows users to produce one-second loop films, was released in 2014, while Hyperlapse, which allows users to take time-lapse videos, was released a year later.

Despite the fact that these applications were released independently of Instagram, their essential features were later included in the social media platform. Despite this, the Boomerang app has received over 300 million downloads since its release. With only 23 million downloads, Hyperlapse, on the other hand, has never been a big hit.

While the business hasn’t issued a comment regarding the shutdown of both apps, the movie isn’t surprising given Instagram’s desire for more users to spend time on its main app. The social network will continue to support the functionalities of these apps, according to the business.

Instagram now only includes IGTV and Layout on its App Store page, both of which were published in 2015 and give tools to integrate numerous photographs into a single image. While IGTV will be deleted from the App Store later this month, the Layout app will continue to exist for the time being, according to the business.

Instagram has removed two more of its older apps from the app stores, a week after confirming its plan to shut down its standalone IGTV app in order to focus on efforts like Reels. Hyperlapse, a timelapse video app, was originally released in 2014, while Boomerang, a looping video app, was released in 2015.

Boomerang had a greater installed base than the other two. Boomerang had 301 million lifetime global downloads, according to Apptopia, compared to only 23 million for Hyperlapse. Furthermore, at the time of its withdrawal, Boomerang was still averaging 26,000 downloads per day, according to the company. Boomerang, on the other hand, was available on both the Apple App Store and Google Play, whereas Hyperlapse was exclusively available on the Apple App Store.

Instagram did not issue a public notice on its site about the removals, but a few people, including social media expert Matt Navarra and Twitter users @KenSchillinger and @WFBrother, tweeted about it today.

It’s not unexpected that these two apps have been removed. Both were created with the intention of providing new creative tools to Instagram users without slowing down the main app. However, the company’s fears about cramming too many functions into its flagship app have long since dissipated. Instagram now allows users to access photo and video postings, Stories, TikTok (Reels), live video, online purchasing, limited-time product drops, and more. Indeed, there’s so much going on inside Instagram these days that the business has moved its major production tool, the “Compose” button, to a more difficult-to-reach location in the top right of the screen rather than the bottom-center.

Meanwhile, Instagram no longer needs special creative effects apps because it has long since integrated its array of creative features right into the Instagram camera. When Instagram introduced new Boomerang effects a few years ago, such as SloMo, Echo, and Duo, it did so directly in Instagram. Instagram is now adding capabilities to its Reels product to encourage users to be more creative with video.

Plus, as the business stated when the IGTV shutdown was confirmed, it now aims to make video as easy to discover and create as possible from within its main app.

It’s also worth mentioning that Phhhoto, a previous Instagram competitor, sued Meta last November for being cut off from Instagram’s social graph, despite the fact that Boomerang plagiarized Phhhoto’s primary function, looping video.

While Hyperlapse and Boomerang have been removed from app stores, Instagram’s Layout, which allows you to organize your images into collages, is still available. Instagram has announced that Layout and Boomerang capabilities would not be removed from the app.

“To better focus our efforts on the main app, we’ve withdrawn support for the separate Boomerang and Hyperlapse apps,” a spokeswoman stated. “We’ll keep working on new ways for people on Instagram to be creative and have fun,” they added.
