Review of the Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma Xbox controller: It almost feels like cheating to use Razer’s Xbox controller

The Wolverine controller from Razer for Xbox proven to be a suitable replacement for the Xbox Elite Controller and other competing options. The firm has recently released a Razer Wolverine V2 model, which is nearly identical to the original in almost every manner. Other features, such as the back paddles, were left out, which garnered criticism. We now offer a brand-new edition with a new design.

The Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma is arrived, with gorgeous RGB lighting and a slew of other features that gamers of all types should take notice of. While it costs twice as much as a typical Xbox Series X|S controller, it comes with a slew of extra functions that regular Xbox controllers lack. This gamepad also improves on the original V2 in a number of ways, which makes me question why it isn’t dubbed a V3.

The Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma is unquestionably one of the greatest Xbox controllers available. At least if you don’t mind connected controllers.

PROS

  • Lights that are lovely
  • There are a number of extra mappable buttons.
  • Return of the back paddles
  • On the buttons and joystick, there’s a lot of action.
  • It’s almost as if using the sensitivity clutch is a form of cheating.

CONS

  • Wired controllers cost more than twice as much as regular controllers.

The Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma is a fantastic controller, featuring significantly better sticks and buttons than the official Xbox controller. The added features make the deal even sweeter, with a sensitivity clutch that is almost too good to be true. The main disadvantage is that it is just wired.

Price and availability for the Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma

The Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma is readily available at most major shops, including Amazon, Walmart, and Best Buy. It’s also available on Razer’s own website. To complement your Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S, the controller is available in both black and white.

The Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma is the real deal.

I’m not usually a fan of third-party controllers, but the Wolverine V2 Chroma from Razer won me over right away.

The Wolverine V2 Chroma is a wired option that works with both Xbox and PC platforms. Because of Corsair’s patent ownership of the technology, it isn’t wireless, which is a disappointment. However, you should not be put off by this.

With the classic offset joysticks, ABXY buttons, and even the new Xbox Series X|S share button, the Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma is designed to look like a regular Xbox controller. The V2 Chroma’s premium features are where it starts to stand out, making the doubled price point seem more than justified.

The Wolverine V2 features rubberized, textured grips similar to those found on Xbox Elite Controllers, as well as magnetic replaceable joysticks, two of which are included in the box with different cap designs. There are additionally additional shoulder buttons across the top, as well as four rear paddle buttons on the reverse. The back paddles were deleted from the V1 in the first iteration of the V2, so seeing them return with enthusiasm is a great improvement. For good measure, you also get trigger locks, which minimize the travel time of the triggers, allowing you to fire faster in shooters and other games.

When comparing third-party controllers to Microsoft’s in-house buttons and triggers, it’s common to have an uneasy sense of “ugh.” With the Wolverine V2 Chroma, I can confidently state that there is no such sense of “ugh.” The buttons and triggers are among the best I’ve ever used, and it didn’t take long for me to forget I was using them. It’s even interesting that they have a clicky “mouse-like” actuation sensation to them.

In competitive play, the Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma gives you a distinct advantage.

The Razer Controller program, which is available for free on Xbox and Windows 10/11, may be used to customize the additional buttons very extensively. This program allows you to assign several functions to the buttons, including the regular Xbox controls as well as a few special Razer toggles, one of which feels nearly cheating.

Although it took some getting used to, the Wolverine V2’s sensitivity clutch function can be genuinely game-changing in some situations. Holding down a paddle assigned to the sensitivity clutch while playing Widowmaker or Ashe in Overwatch lowers the pace at which the joysticks actuate motion.

For movement, I could keep the sensitivity high, but lessen it for producing more precise shots at a distance. I’m not typically good at landing headshots, but I can state without a doubt that this improved almost instantly, even if it took some practice to get used to the positioning.

The Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma has significantly more usefulness than the regular controller when you combine the trigger locks, sensitivity clutch, and back paddles, giving you a considerable advantage in competitive play. The ability to map normal actions to the paddles makes motion much easier in games like Chivalry 2 with rather intricate controls, because you don’t have to remove your fingertips off the thumbsticks for any reason.

The bad stuff with the Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma

The Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma isn’t flawless, and neither is any other product. Wirelessness is the most noticeable and evident missing. As I previously stated, Corsair owns the patent for wireless gamepads, which restricts the technology’s use. This time, the Wolverine V2 Chroma includes a detachable USB-C cable, but I’m not sure why you’d want to do so. I’m not convinced this was the best choice, given that USB-C doesn’t anchor itself into ports as well as Micro-USB does.

The price is another potential drawback, though I’d say that it’s very reasonable given all of the features you get. The Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma is more than triple the price of a conventional Xbox controller, at $150. If you don’t believe you’ll use the extra capabilities, or if you’re not particularly competitive in games like Call of Duty or Fortnite, I’m not sure losing wireless is worth the asking price.

Should you buy the Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma?

The Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma is a fantastic controller that has conquered my illogical dislike for third-party controllers, which stems from the deluge of low-quality gear we used to get in the 1990s. The ergonomics are excellent, the buttons and sticks are of the highest quality, and the feature set is extensive for the price.

If you’re looking for a unique way to express yourself, this is the book for you.

  • You’re a competitive gamer in search of a competitive advantage.
  • You’re a fan of Razer’s glistening lights.

If you’re looking for a unique way to express yourself, this isn’t the product for you.

  • You’re a more casual gamer who’s content using the standard Xbox controller.

It’s a little annoying that this doesn’t have wireless connectivity owing to patent issues, but Razer can’t be blamed for that – but it might be a dealbreaker for you.

However, the Razer Wolverine V2 is a fantastic alternative to the Xbox Elite Controller and the SCUF Instinct Pro Controller. Paddles, hair triggers, and that incredibly cool sensitivity clutch that is a sniper’s dream are all included. The Razer Wolverine V2 Chroma is an excellent choice for competitive gaming. And, hey, aren’t RGBs supposed to make us all better gamers?
