I never thought I’d spend over $50 on a trash can, but here’s why I’m glad I splurged on a Simplehuman one

Trash cans are an unexpectedly high cost. I discovered this while looking for a new one for my kitchen on Amazon a few years back.
Since a garbage can isn’t exactly an exciting buy, I didn’t want to spend more than $50 on one. However, the more I looked, the more I realized I was going to spend at least that much on a garbage can that I didn’t even like.
That’s one of the reasons I went out and bought a fancy $200 Simplehuman one. I figured if I was going to spend close to $100 on a new trash can (I wanted one with separate compartments for ordinary trash and recyclables), I might as well spend a little more and get one I loved.

Because I don’t have room to place a garbage can in the cabinet under my sink or anywhere else, I opted to approach this purchase like a piece of furniture.

The garbage can is the first thing people notice when they arrive into my flat, for better or worse, and my rose-gold one from Simplehuman creates an excellent first impression. It’s stylish (can I say that about a trash can? ), remarkably space-efficient for the quantity of waste it can contain, and it even includes a built-in bag dispenser that helps you refill garbage bags quickly and conveniently without rummaging around your kitchen for more.

It’ll also set you back $200. Yes, it’ll cost you $200. I’m sure a lot of people are rolling their eyes as they read this, but that doesn’t bother me. This is by far the best-designed garbage can I’ve seen, and the convenience, organization, and aesthetic it provides justify its premium price in my opinion.

A 10-year warranty is also included with the garbage can. You’re protected if the pedal breaks as a result of “regular household use,” for example. The company will either supply free replacement parts or arrange for a repair. You only need to register the can on Simplehuman’s website.

I never thought I’d spend more than $50 on a garbage can, let alone $200, but it’s the best investment I’ve made for my home so far this year.

The steel pedal on the can is durable and strong, and the company’s patented “lid shox” technology provides a smooth, silent closing every time. My old garbage can would slam shut and scrape up the wall, leaving unsightly scuff marks. That is no longer the case. The stainless steel liner rim grabs and conceals each garbage bag. It’s design details like this that help justify the $200 price tag on the container.

Replacement garbage bags for Simplehuman trash cans are available on Amazon. For this trash can, a box of 60 garbage bags costs $18.99, which is only a few dollars more than 60 Glad garbage bags.

I save 5% on each order and receive fresh garbage bags sent every three months by joining up for Amazon’s Subscribe & Save program.
