Bungie, the developer of Destiny and the original creator of Halo, is being purchased by Sony for $3.6 billion. The acquisition comes on the heels of Microsoft’s news that it plans to buy Activision Blizzard for $68.7 billion. Bungie CEO Pete Parsons writes in a blog post that the company would “continue to independently publish and creatively develop our games.”
“In SIE, we have discovered a partner who fully supports us in all we do and wants to expedite our ambition of creating generation-spanning entertainment, all while protecting Bungie’s creative independence,” Parsons adds. “SIE, like us, thinks that game worlds are just the start of what our IPs may become.” We all have a dream of building and nurturing legendary franchises that bring together friends from all over the world, families from different generations, and fans from various platforms and entertainment media.

Bungie will remain a multiplatform, independent studio and publisher, working with Sony Interactive Entertainment’s PlayStation Studios creators, according to Jim Ryan, the company’s president and CEO, in a post on the PlayStation Blog. “Bungie’s world-class competence in multiplatform development and live game services will assist us in realizing our aim of bringing PlayStation to hundreds of millions of gamers,” he said.
In a second blog post, Hermen Hulst, the head of PlayStation Studios, echoed that attitude. “Bungie’s technical expertise, along with their track record of establishing highly active communities,” he said, “makes them a natural choice for partnership with PlayStation Studios.” “We’re eager to start making preparations to exchange talents and knowledge, as well as to realize the full potential of having Bungie’s brilliant minds under the PlayStation umbrella.”
Bungie is stating unequivocally that future titles will not be limited to the PlayStation. “No. We want the worlds we’re creating to be accessible to everybody who enjoys video games. Bungie notes in a FAQ on the deal, “We will continue to be self-published, creatively independent, and we will continue to promote one, unified Bungie community.” Bungie also addressed how the acquisition will impact the long-running success Destiny 2: Forsaken.

Q. Does Bungie's acquisition by PlayStation have any direct influence on how I play and experience Destiny 2 as a Destiny 2 player?

No. Destiny 2's status as a multi-platform game with full Cross Play remains unaffected. On February 22, 2022, we want you to play The Witch Queen on the platform of your choice.

Q. Will Bungie's acquisition of PlayStation have an influence on Destiny 2 on non-PlayStation platforms?

No. We want to keep the same wonderful experience you've had on your preferred platform.

Q. Will Bungie's acquisition of PlayStation affect or change any previously announced seasons, events, packs, or expansions?

No, Bungie retains complete creative control over our games and community. Our goals for the Light and Dark Saga remain unchanged until the 2024 release of The Final Shape.

Q. Will there be any platform-exclusive content in Destiny 2: The Witch Queen?

No. There will be no platform-specific content in The Witch Queen. Every player should have a fantastic Destiny experience, regardless of where they play.

Q. Will cross-platform features such as Cross Save, Cross Play, the Destiny 2 Companion App, or third-party programs such as Destiny Item Manager (DIM) be modified or removed?

No. Bungie has maintained its dedication to cross-platform play and social features. We think that games are best shared with friends, regardless of where they play, and we will continue to invest in new features and platforms to support this belief.

Q. If Bungie has further games in development, will they now be exclusive to PlayStation?

No. We want the worlds we're creating to be accessible to everybody who enjoys video games. We'll keep being self-published and creatively autonomous, and we'll keep driving a single, cohesive Bungie community.

Q. Will my platform be supported if I play Destiny on Steam, Xbox, or Stadia?

Yes.

The deal is the latest in a string of significant acquisitions announced only this month. The industry is still suffering from Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, which came just over a week after Take-$12.7 Two’s billion acquisition of mobile firm Zynga. Last year, Sony acquired a number of studios to add to its PlayStation Studios family, including Housemarque, the creator of Returnal, and Bluepoint Games, the developer of the Demon’s Souls remake.
