Steam Link Anywhere, a new service from Valve, will allow you to stream your Steam games from your computer to anywhere in the world via the Steam Link hardware or the Steam Link app, allowing you to play your favorite games on the go.
With the new Steam Link app, gamers will be able to stream games to other people’s homes as well. In theory, Steam Link Anywhere will let users stream games from their PC to play anywhere they have internet service thanks to this new expansion of Steam Link, which works in conjunction with the Android app (unfortunately, Apple continues to block the iOS app).
Steam Link Anywhere, according to Valve, is still in early beta, but gamers can test it out on their PCs now by downloading Steam Link beta build 688. Using Steam Link Anywhere, the only requirements are a good upload connection for the host computer and a good network connection for the device you’re using to play.
There are currently only a handful of devices that can stream from a PC to another PC via Steam Link Anywhere: Android phones and Raspberry Pi computers, as well as the now-discontinued Steam Link hardware.
It’s also important to note when the news was released: Preparations for Google’s Project Stream-powered streaming gaming service, which is expected to be unveiled at GDC 2019 on March 19th, are being pushed by Steam. Announcing its intention to fight back against Google’s game streaming plans, Steam appears to be signaling a willingness to take on the company’s rivals.
Google isn’t Steam’s only rival in this market: In-home game streaming from PC to Xbox consoles looks a lot like Steam Link, which Microsoft recently demonstrated. To compete with both Steam and Google, Microsoft’s xCloud game-streaming service is expected to be launched later this year.
