Amazon gets futuristic with its new smart home devices, including a flying camera and household robot

On September 28, Amazon introduced a new home security robot, a larger echo smart display, a video calling gadget that projects a touch-enabled image, and a pricing for its Ring flying smart home camera.

New smart home products like the Blink Video Doorbell and Amazon Smart Thermostat were also introduced.

The portfolio translates Amazon’s futuristic ideas into high-end products that will be sold. The collection also widens the company’s range of smart home gadgets available to anyone.

Here’s the best of Amazon’s news:

Amazon’s ambitious new Astro is a miniature robot with a screen and cameras. It’s basically a rolling Amazon Echo smart display with Alexa and a smart home security camera. You can even instruct Astro to deliver little items like snacks to guests via its rear trunk.

Many of Astro’s advanced home monitoring features require a Ring Protect Pro subscription from Amazon.

Amazon said Astro will eventually be able to remind caregivers, manage shopping lists, and get activity notifications. This will require a soon-to-be-released Amazon service dubbed “Alexa Together.”

A public beta testing session for Astro is presently accessible through Amazon’s invite-only “Day 1 Editions” program. To get an invite, go to Astro’s product page. Astro is currently $1000. After the free trial, it’ll be $1,500.

It can also be hung horizontally or vertically. The Echo Show 15 has a larger display and a revamped home screen.

To ask Alexa questions, display calendars, create reminders, make shopping lists, stream video, display images, make video chats and control other smart home devices.

The Echo Show 15 will be available “soon” for $250.

Amazon’s Glow has an 8-inch vertical screen and a built-in projector. In front of the device, a 19-inch touch-enabled interactive book, game, or drawing app appears. The objective is to link youngsters and families via video calling.

With the free Glow app, family and friends may see the video and interact with the projected apps on a tablet.

The Amazon Glow is a $250 invitation-only test. After the free trial, it’ll be $300. On the Amazon Glow product page, request an invitation.

Amazon’s Halo View is a $80 fitness tracker that measures heart rate and blood oxygen levels. It can also track sleep and workouts.

It includes a free one-year membership to Amazon’s Halo service, which features individualized training routines and the Halo View. After the first year, Halo costs $4 per month.

It’s “coming shortly,” Amazon says.

The Amazon Smart Home Thermostat is an affordable, Alexa-enabled smart thermostat. Alexa speech commands require another voice-enabled Alexa device, like an Echo smart speaker.

The Amazon Smart Home Thermostat costs $60 today.

The Amazon Blink Video Doorbell is a simple, low-cost video doorbell that can be powered by your current doorbell wiring or by two-year-old batteries.

The Blink app or an Amazon Echo device may notify you when your doorbell is rung and provide two-way audio communication. You can also get motion notifications when outside. It also features night vision so you can see in the dark.

On October 21, Blink Video Doorbell will be available for $50.

Formed in 2015, Ring Alarm Pro is a smart home security system that includes a built-in Wi-Fi router. The concept is to integrate standard home alarms with an Eero mesh Wi-Fi system to distribute robust and fast Wi-Fi signals. It eliminates the requirement for Eero mesh Wi-Fi stations.

Preorders for the $250 Ring Alarm Pro are now open. Preorders will ship November 3.

An always-home smart camera in the shape of a drone. While you’re away, it monitors your home like a conventional smart home camera. It can also be triggered by Ring sensors on doors or windows, flying over to investigate.

It has a charging station and links to your Wi-Fi network to provide notifications and transmit video to the Ring mobile app.

The drone is only for indoor use and cannot fly up or down stairs or stories.

Inviting only, the Ring Always Home Cam costs $250.
