What you should know
- This year, Windows 11 will not have Android app support.
- In the coming months, an Insiders preview will be released.
- Microsoft claims to be in close collaboration with Intel and Amazon.
Android app compatibility, which was first promised during the Windows 11 event in June, is one of the most anticipated aspects of Windows 11. Unfortunately, anyone interested in this feature will have to wait, since Microsoft said today that Android app compatibility will not be included in Windows 11, which will be released on October 5.
Users will be able to search for, install, and run Android apps through the Microsoft Store on Windows 11. Android apps on Windows 11 are powered by a new Windows Subsystem for Android, which Microsoft says will go into preview with Insiders in the coming months in collaboration with the Amazon AppStore.
This means that formal Android app compatibility won’t arrive until 2022 at the earliest. We don’t know if Microsoft intends to include this feature in a future update to Windows 11 version 21H2, or if it will wait until the next major Windows 11 feature update, version 22H2, which is due out in the fall of 2022.
To offer Android app support to Windows 11, Microsoft has collaborated with Amazon and Intel. Android apps will be hosted and downloaded through Amazon’s App Store, while Intel is working on a bridge technology that will allow ARM-compiled Android apps to operate on x86 machines.
